//Business// Phil Knight On Tiger: “Endorsements Come With Risk”

December 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment

While there are many companies that are selling their Tiger Woods stock by the boatloads, there are many companies that understand that endorsing athletes often means that you must bear a bit of controversy and weather the storm, Nike is certainly one of those companies. Nike is no stranger to controversy and the Chairman and Co-Founder, Phil Knight himself has come out to say that Tiger’s relationship with the super shoe company, wont be ending anytime soon:

Woods’ background was checked out by Nike before signing a deal with him and, according to Knight, “he came out clean.” Knight said companies cannot get such background checks right all the time and “there’s always a risk.” He added that the company’s relationship with its most famous client isn’t going to change.“I think he’s been really great,” Knight said in the interview published Monday. “When his career is over, you’ll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip, but the media is making a big deal out of it right now.”

This too shall pass. I expect many more companies to continue this knee jerk reactions due to all of the dirt that has been dropped in the past few weeks, but expect Tiger to make a triumphant comeback to the sport he carries on his back, and when he does, Nike will be right there counting the gwap.
